Childebert I

c. 496–558 · 6th century

Childebert I was a Merovingian king of the Franks who ruled from Paris from 511 to 558. A son of Clovis I, he shared in the division of his father's realm, joined his brothers in the conquest of Burgundy and in murdering the sons of Chlodomer, and campaigned against the Visigoths in Spain. He founded the abbey later called Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and died without sons.
