Kingdom of Orléans

511 CE – 524 CE · capital Orléans

Short-lived Merovingian kingdom of Clovis' son Chlodomer, which vanished when he fell in battle in 524.

Origins

In the division of 511 Clovis' second son Chlodomer received lands along the Loire, with Orléans as his capital, together with Tours, Bourges and part of Aquitaine.

Rule and society

Chlodomer ruled for only thirteen years. Little is known of his government beyond his wars against the Kingdom of the Burgundians, during which he had the captured King Sigismund and his family killed in 524.

Decline and legacy

Chlodomer was killed later in 524 at the Battle of Vézeronce. His uncles Childebert I and Chlothar I murdered two of his young sons and divided his kingdom. The third son, Clodoald, escaped and became a monk; the town of Saint-Cloud near Paris is named after him.
