Chalon-sur-Saône

Also known as Cabillonum

Chalon-sur-Saône is a city in Burgundy in eastern France on the river Saône. As the Roman Cabillonum it was a river port and later a bishopric, and in the 6th century the Merovingian king Guntram made it the capital of his Frankish kingdom of Burgundy. It later belonged to the Duchy of Burgundy. Nicéphore Niépce, the inventor of photography, was born there in 1765.
