Autun

Also known as Augustodunum

Autun is a town in Burgundy, eastern France, founded under Augustus as Augustodunum to replace Bibracte as the chief town of the Aedui. It became a noted centre of Roman schools and keeps parts of its walls, gates and theatre. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of counts and bishops, and its Cathedral of Saint-Lazare holds celebrated Romanesque sculpture by Gislebertus.
