Brunhilda of Austrasia

c. 543–613 · 6th century · Also known as Brunhilda, Brunhild of Austrasia

Brunhilda was a Visigothic princess who married the Frankish king Sigebert I of Austrasia in 567 and dominated Merovingian politics for half a century. The murder of her sister, blamed on Fredegund, began a long feud between Austrasia and Neustria. She ruled as regent for her son, grandsons and great-grandson until Chlothar II captured and executed her in 613.
