The Pippinids were a Frankish noble family of Austrasia, named after Pippin of Landen and Pippin of Herstal, who held the office of mayor of the palace in the 7th and 8th centuries. Through it they gained effective control of the Frankish kingdoms while Merovingian kings reigned. Pippin the Short took the crown in 751, and the family is known from then as the Carolingians.
