Fredegund

d. 597 · 6th century

Fredegund was queen of the Franks as the wife of Chilperic I, king of Neustria, rising from servant to queen after the murder of his previous wife Galswintha. Her feud with Galswintha's sister Brunhild, queen of Austrasia, fuelled decades of civil war among the Merovingian kingdoms. After Chilperic's murder in 584 she ruled as regent for her son Chlothar II until her death in 597.
