Battle of Thermopylae

480 BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Thermopylae · Part of the Greco-Persian Wars

The Battle of Thermopylae was fought in 480 BCE at a narrow coastal pass in central Greece, where a small Greek force led by King Leonidas of Sparta held off the army of Xerxes I for several days. The Persians eventually outflanked the defenders and destroyed them. The battle allowed the Achaemenid Empire to advance into central Greece, but it became an enduring symbol of resistance.
