Amphictyonic League
Origins
An amphictyony was a league of neighbours sharing a sanctuary. This one began at the shrine of Demeter at Anthela near Thermopylae and extended its care to Delphi. Its role became prominent in the First Sacred War, traditionally c. 595-585 BCE, when members destroyed the town of Kirrha for abusing pilgrims and then reorganised the Pythian Games in 582 BCE.
Rule and society
Twelve peoples, among them the Thessalians, Phocians, Boeotians, Dorians and Ionians, each sent two delegates (hieromnemones) to a council meeting twice a year at Anthela and Delphi. The council looked after temple property and finances, the Pythian Games and the sacred land, and could fine or declare war on offenders. Powerful states used its votes to dress political aims as piety.
Decline and legacy
The Third Sacred War against Phocis (356-346 BCE) brought Philip II of Macedon onto the council, and the Fourth (339 BCE) led to his victory at Chaeronea. The Aetolian League dominated it in the 3rd century BCE. Augustus reorganised its membership, and it lingered as a religious body into the 2nd century CE.
