Battle of the Yellow Ford

1598 · 16th century · Part of the Nine Years' War (Ireland)

The Battle of the Yellow Ford was fought on 14 August 1598 on the Callan river near Armagh, where the Irish forces of Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Red Hugh O'Donnell routed an English army under Sir Henry Bagenal marching to relieve the Blackwater fort. Bagenal and many of his men were killed in the worst English defeat of the Tudor conquest of Ireland.
