Covenanters
The Covenanters were Scottish Presbyterians who bound themselves by the National Covenant of 1638 and the Solemn League and Covenant of 1643 to defend their church against royal religious policy. Their revolt against Charles I began the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and a Covenanter army was sent to Ulster in 1642 to fight the Irish rebels. Persecuted after the Restoration, they remained a radical strand of Scottish Presbyterianism.
