Confederate Ireland
Confederate Ireland was the self-governing Irish Catholic government established in 1642, during the Irish Confederate Wars, with its seat at Kilkenny. Led by a general assembly and a supreme council of Catholic nobles, gentry and clergy, it controlled most of Ireland and negotiated with Charles I while fighting Scottish Covenanters and English parliamentarians. Divided over peace terms, it dissolved itself in 1649, and its lands were overrun by Cromwell's conquest.
