Battle of Aughrim

1691 · 17th century · Part of the Williamite War in Ireland

The Battle of Aughrim was fought on 12 July 1691 near Aughrim in County Galway, between the Jacobite army of the Marquis de St Ruth and the Williamite army under Godert de Ginkel. St Ruth was killed by a cannonball and his army broke with heavy losses, making it perhaps the bloodiest battle in Irish history. It led to the fall of Galway and Limerick and the end of the Williamite War.
