Covenant of Shaoling
The Covenant of Shaoling was the agreement of 656 BCE that ended Duke Huan of Qi's campaign against the State of Chu. Leading a coalition of northern lords, Duke Huan marched south after overrunning Cai; the Chu envoy Qu Wan negotiated, and the two sides swore a covenant at Shaoling, in present-day Henan. It checked Chu's northward expansion and confirmed Duke Huan's standing as hegemon.
