Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone

c. 1550–1616 · 16th century

Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, was the most powerful Gaelic lord of Ulster at the end of the 16th century. Raised partly under English influence, he led the Ulster lords, including Red Hugh O'Donnell and Hugh Maguire, in the Nine Years' War against Elizabeth I and won at the Yellow Ford in 1598. Defeat at Kinsale in 1601 forced his submission, and in 1607 he left Ireland in the Flight of the Earls, dying in Rome.
