Hugh of Arles

c. 880–948 · 10th century · Also known as Hugh of Provence

Hugh of Arles, also called Hugh of Provence, was count of Arles and Vienne and effective ruler of Provence before becoming King of Italy in 926. He sought to control Rome through marriage to Marozia but was driven out by her son Alberic II in 932. In 933 he gave up his rights in Provence to Rudolf II of Upper Burgundy, uniting the two Burgundies. Berengar of Ivrea later forced him from power, and he died in Provence in 948.
