Kingdom of Tir Eoghain

1185 CE – 1607 CE (approx.) · capital Dungannon

The O'Neill kingdom of mid-Ulster, the most powerful Gaelic lordship of late medieval Ireland, whose last ruler led the Nine Years' War.

Origins

Tir Eoghain, 'Eogan's land', descends from the Cenel nEogain, the northern Ui Neill kindred traced to Eogan, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. From the late 12th century the O'Neills contested the kingship with the Mac Lochlainn line, which they finally overthrew in 1241, ruling from Dungannon with inaugurations at Tullyhogue.

Rule and society

The O'Neills dominated Ulster, taking tribute from lesser lords such as the O'Cahans and Maguires. Their power rested on cattle, a large army including Scottish gallowglasses, and a court of poets and lawyers. Conn Bacach O'Neill became Earl of Tyrone in 1542, but conflict with the crown continued under Shane O'Neill.

Decline and legacy

Hugh O'Neill led the Nine Years' War against England, but defeat at Kinsale in 1601 forced his submission. He left in the Flight of the Earls in 1607, and Tyrone was confiscated for the Plantation of Ulster in the Kingdom of Ireland.
