Second Persian invasion of Greece
The Second Persian invasion of Greece was the massive campaign launched by Xerxes I of the Achaemenid Empire in 480 BCE. It included the Persian victory at Thermopylae and the sack of Athens, but Greek victories at Salamis and later Plataea forced the Persians to withdraw. This failure revealed the limits of Persian power against Greek hoplites, and accounts of the Seleucid Empire also refer to it.
