Battle of Anyrakai

c. 1729–1730 · 18th century · Part of the Kazakh–Dzungar wars

The Battle of Anyrakai was fought around 1729–1730 in the Anyrakai Mountains of south-eastern Kazakhstan, near Lake Balkhash, between the Kazakhs and the Dzungars. The combined forces of the three Kazakh juzes under Abulkhair Khan and batyrs such as Kabanbai and Bogenbai won a major victory that recovered part of the pastures lost after the Dzungar invasions of 1723. The site is remembered in Kazakh tradition as the 'place of the wailing of the enemy'.
