Battle of Burford

752 · 8th century

The Battle of Burford was fought in 752 near Burford in Oxfordshire, where, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Cuthred of Wessex defeated Æthelbald of Mercia. The victory briefly freed Wessex from Mercian overlordship, though Mercian dominance returned under Offa later in the eighth century.
