Battle of Garni

1225 · 13th century · Also known as Garni

The Battle of Garni was fought in 1225 near Garni, in present-day Armenia, where the Khwarazmian ruler Jalal al-Din, who had fled the Mongols, routed the Georgian army. The defeat left Georgia open to invasion, and in 1226 Jalal al-Din took and sacked Tbilisi with great loss of life, ending the kingdom's period of dominance in the Caucasus.
