Battle of Iwo Jima
The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought from 19 February to 26 March 1945, when United States Marines captured the volcanic island of Iwo Jima from Japan in the Pacific War. The Japanese garrison of about 21,000 under General Kuribayashi Tadamichi fought from tunnels and almost all died; American casualties numbered some 26,000, including nearly 7,000 killed. The flag-raising on Mount Suribachi became an iconic photograph.
