Battle of Muizenberg

1795 · 18th century · Part of the French Revolutionary Wars

The Battle of Muizenberg was fought near Cape Town from August to September 1795, when a British expedition attacked the Dutch Cape Colony to keep the sea route to India from France after the Netherlands fell to the French Republic. After weeks of skirmishing and the arrival of reinforcements, the Dutch governor surrendered, beginning the first British occupation of the Cape.
