Battle of Blaauwberg
The Battle of Blaauwberg was fought on 8 January 1806 near Cape Town, when a British force under General David Baird defeated the Batavian garrison of Governor Jan Willem Janssens. The Cape surrendered days later, beginning permanent British rule over the colony, which the Netherlands formally ceded in 1814. Britain wanted the Cape to protect the sea route to India.
