Battle of Newburn

1640 · 17th century · Part of the Bishops' Wars

The Battle of Newburn was fought on 28 August 1640 at a ford over the River Tyne west of Newcastle, where the Covenanter army under Alexander Leslie defeated an English force and went on to occupy Newcastle. The defeat in this Second Bishops' War left Charles I unable to pay for his army and forced him to summon the Long Parliament, which began the crisis leading to the English Civil War.
