Battle of Valmy

1792 · 18th century · Also known as Cannonade of Valmy · Part of the French Revolutionary Wars

The Battle of Valmy, fought on 20 September 1792 in Champagne in north-eastern France, halted the Prussian-led invasion that threatened revolutionary Paris. French armies under Dumouriez and Kellermann held their ground in an artillery duel, and the Duke of Brunswick's army soon withdrew. The next day the newly assembled National Convention abolished the monarchy; Goethe, who was with the Prussian army, later wrote that the day marked the beginning of a new era in the history of the world.
