Bayezid II

1447–1512 · 15th century · Also known as Sultan Bayezid II

Bayezid II was sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1481 to 1512, the son of Mehmed II. His early reign was shaped by the rivalry of his brother Cem. He welcomed Jews expelled from Spain in 1492, took Kilia and Akkerman from Moldavia in 1484, and in the war with Venice of 1499–1503 captured Lepanto, Modon and Coron. He was forced to abdicate by his son Selim I in 1512.
