Selim I

Selim I was Ottoman sultan from 1512 to 1520. He defeated the Safavids at Chaldiran in 1514 and conquered the Mamluk Sultanate in 1516–1517, bringing Syria, Egypt and the holy cities of Arabia under Ottoman rule. The Abbasid Caliphate and Mamluk Sultanate profiles note that his conquest ended the Mamluk state and the shadow Abbasid caliphate in Cairo.
