Belfort Gap
The Belfort Gap, or Burgundian Gate, is a lowland pass in eastern France between the Vosges to the north and the Jura to the south, linking the Rhine valley with the basins of the Saône and Rhône. Guarded by Montbéliard and later by the fortress of Belfort, it has been a major route of trade and invasion and carries the Rhine–Rhône canal and modern road and rail links.
