Bemoim was a prince of the Jolof Empire in present-day Senegal who ruled for a time before being driven out in a succession struggle. In 1488 he went to Portugal to seek help from King João II, was baptised with the king as his godfather and took the name João. He returned to Senegal with a Portuguese fleet that was to build a fort, but was killed by its commander, Pero Vaz da Cunha, on the voyage.
