Benin bronze plaques

Also known as bronze plaques

The Benin bronze plaques are cast brass and bronze panels that once decorated the pillars of the royal palace in Benin City. They depict the oba, chiefs, warriors, ceremonies and Portuguese visitors. They served as a visual record of court hierarchy and royal authority in the Benin Empire and form part of the wider body of works known as the Benin Bronzes.
