Cultural patronage

Cultural patronage is the sponsorship of art, architecture, literature and learning by rulers and elites. It was a recurring means by which empires displayed legitimacy, attracted talent and left lasting legacies. Examples include the House of Wisdom of the Abbasid Caliphate, the architecture and miniatures of the Timurid and Safavid empires, the monuments of the Mughal Empire and the scholarship of the Carolingian Renaissance.
