House of Wisdom

Also known as Bayt al-Hikma

The House of Wisdom, or Bayt al-Hikma, was a major intellectual institution in Baghdad under the Abbasid Caliphate. It is associated with the translation of Greek, Persian and Indian works into Arabic and with advances in mathematics, astronomy and other sciences. Baghdad's learning suffered severely when the Mongols sacked the city in 1258.
