Bertrand du Guesclin

c. 1320–1380 · 14th century

Bertrand du Guesclin was a Breton knight who became constable of France in 1370 and the leading French commander of the Hundred Years' War under Charles V. Captured at Auray in 1364 and at Nájera in 1367, he helped place Henry of Trastámara on the throne of Castile in 1369. Avoiding pitched battles, his campaigns of the 1370s recovered most of the lands ceded to England. He was buried at Saint-Denis among the kings.
