Bewcastle Cross

c. 8th century · 8th century

The Bewcastle Cross is an Anglo-Saxon stone cross standing in the churchyard of Bewcastle in Cumbria, probably carved in the early eighth century. Its shaft, which has lost its head, bears figures of Christ, John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, vine scrolls, chequer patterns, a sundial and runic inscriptions. With the Ruthwell Cross it is among the finest sculpture of the Northumbrian Renaissance.
