Ruthwell Cross

8th century · 8th century

The Ruthwell Cross is an eighth-century Anglo-Saxon stone cross now inside the church of Ruthwell in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Its carved panels show scenes from the Gospels with Latin inscriptions, and its sides bear runic verses related to the Old English poem The Dream of the Rood. Broken up by order of the Church of Scotland in the 1640s, it was reassembled in the nineteenth century.
