Ceolfrith

c. 642–716 · 7th century · Also known as Saint Ceolfrith

Ceolfrith (c. 642–716) was abbot of the twin monastery of Wearmouth–Jarrow from 688 and the teacher of Bede. He enlarged the library founded by Benedict Biscop and had three great single-volume Latin Bibles made at the monastery. In 716 he set out for Rome carrying one of them, the Codex Amiatinus, as a gift for the pope, but died on the way at Langres.
