Ceolred of Mercia

d. 716 · 8th century

Ceolred was king of Mercia from 709 to 716, the son of Æthelred. He fought Ine of Wessex at Woden's Barrow in 715. Saint Boniface condemned him for his immoral life and for violating the privileges of monasteries, and he is said to have died in a fit of madness at a feast. Æthelbald, whom he had driven into exile, succeeded him.
