Ceolwulf II of Mercia

r. 874–c. 879 · 9th century

Ceolwulf II was king of Mercia from 874 to about 879, installed by the Great Heathen Army after Burgred fled. In 877 the Vikings divided Mercia, settling the eastern part and leaving him the west. Coins show that he issued a joint coinage with Alfred the Great, and recently found hoards suggest a closer alliance than West Saxon sources admit.
