Ine of Wessex

c. 670–c. 728 · 8th century

Ine of Wessex was king of the West Saxons from 688 to 726, one of the strongest Anglo-Saxon rulers before Alfred. He issued an important law code, founded or endowed churches including Glastonbury, and pushed West Saxon power westward into Somerset and Devon, fighting King Geraint of the British kingdom of Dumnonia around 710. He abdicated in 726 and went on pilgrimage to Rome, where he died.
