Church of Scotland
The Church of Scotland, known as the Kirk, is Scotland's national church, Presbyterian in government and Reformed in doctrine. It emerged from the Scottish Reformation of 1560 led by John Knox and, after long conflict with the Stuart kings over bishops, was confirmed as Presbyterian in 1690. Its position was guaranteed by the Treaty of Union in 1707, and it is governed by a General Assembly rather than bishops.
