The Dream of the Rood

The Dream of the Rood is an Old English poem in which the poet dreams of the Cross, which speaks of its part in Christ's crucifixion as a loyal retainer of a heroic lord. The full text survives in the Vercelli Book of the late tenth century, but lines related to it were carved in runes on the eighth-century Ruthwell Cross, making it one of the earliest English poems.
