Cædmon

fl. c. 657–680 · 7th century

Cædmon was a cowherd at the monastery of Whitby under Abbess Hild who, according to Bede, received the gift of composing religious verse in a dream. His nine-line hymn on the Creation, preserved in manuscripts of Bede's Ecclesiastical History, is among the earliest recorded poems in the English language. He became a monk and turned scripture into Old English verse.
