Cædwalla

c. 659–689 · 7th century · Also known as Cædwalla of Wessex

Cædwalla was king of Wessex from about 685 to 688. In a short and violent reign he conquered Sussex, Surrey, Kent and the Isle of Wight, where Bede says he set out to wipe out the native population and had the two young brothers of King Arwald killed after their baptism. He then gave up his throne, travelled to Rome and was baptised by Pope Sergius I shortly before his death in 689.
