Athelney
Athelney is a low hill rising above the marshes of the Somerset Levels in south-west England. Alfred the Great took refuge there after the Danish attack on Chippenham in January 878, building a fort from which he harassed the enemy before his victory at Edington. He later founded a monastery at Athelney in thanksgiving, and the Alfred Jewel was found nearby in 1693.
