Chippenham
Chippenham is a market town in Wiltshire, south-west England, on the Bristol Avon. It was a royal estate of the West Saxon kings, and in January 878 the Danes under Guthrum seized it in a surprise winter attack that drove Alfred the Great into the marshes of Athelney. After the Battle of Edington later that year, the Danes surrendered to Alfred at their stronghold, probably Chippenham.
