Biedermeier

1815–1848 · 19th century

Biedermeier is the name given to the middle-class culture of Central Europe, especially Austria and Germany, between the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and the revolutions of 1848. Under censorship and political repression, it turned to private and domestic life, producing simple, comfortable furniture, intimate genre painting, house music and sentimental literature.
