Bogdan I of Moldavia

d. c. 1367 · 14th century

Bogdan I was a Romanian voivode from Maramureș who, having quarrelled with the Hungarian crown, crossed the Carpathians around 1359, drove out the descendants of Dragoș and made Moldavia independent of Hungary. He ruled until about 1367. His successors ruled Moldavia for two centuries, and the Ottomans later called the country Kara Boğdan, 'Black Bogdania', after him.
