Maramureș

Maramureș is a historical region in the north-eastern Carpathians, on the upper Tisza, today divided between Romania and Ukraine. In the Middle Ages it was a Hungarian county in which Romanian nobles kept local autonomy; two of them, Dragoș and Bogdan, crossed the mountains in the 14th century to found Moldavia. It is known for its wooden churches, several of which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
