Eastern Carpathians

The Eastern Carpathians are the section of the Carpathian mountains running through south-eastern Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine and northern Romania. They formed the western boundary of medieval Moldavia, separating it from Transylvania. Their forested passes and valleys sheltered early Moldavian settlement, and the painted monasteries of Bukovina lie in their foothills.
